ADHD and the Criminal Justice System (I) - Janet Kramer, MD, CCHP; Patrick Hurley
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a recognized neurodevelopmental disability, is found in a large
number of inmates. However, the impact of ADHD in criminal justice systems and correctional institutions
is just starting to be understood. The presenters will provide clear, practical advice and information based
on the best current scientific information about ADHD and its impact on individuals with this challenging
condition.
Educational Objectives
1. Identify people in the criminal justice system who may display characteristics of ADHD and learn
when to recommend further evaluation
2. Know the criteria for an appropriate diagnosis and learn how to develop treatment goals after the
diagnosis is made
3. Recognize challenges in the criminal justice system that may delay appropriate treatment for those
with ADHD

Hurley speaks to GLYI about ADHD and Criminal Justice Book
April 23, 2007 - Littleton, CO
The "Greater Littleton Youth Initiative" (GLYI) was developed from the shootings at nearby Columbine High School in April of 1999. The GLYI asked Patrick J. Hurley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa & Co-author Robert Eme Ph.D of Evanston, Illinois to speak to several area groups on April 23, 2007. This was a closed session and not open to the General Public, and was held at the Littleton Colorado City Hall. They addressed these select groups on their book "ADHD & the Criminal Justice System"

10:00am- Noon - Greater Littleton Youth Initiative program committee/mental health providors
1:30pm-3:00pm - Criminal Justice System Representatives
3:00pm-4:30pm - Greater Littleton Youth Initiative Board

Columbine High School is not located in the city limits of Littleton, but just outside of town in a nearby county. Many reports since the massacre mention it is as Littleton, and this initiative began as a result of the shootings. Due to the recent shootings at Virginia Tech University and the resulting wounds, this event opened in Littleton, advanced publicity of the
talk was elected not to be released.
Hurley speaks on ADHD at Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association
September 18, 2006 - Des Moines, IA
Patrick Hurley spoke to a group of 150 Sheriffs & Deputies at the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association in Des Moines. The talk which lasted for two hours emphasized the prevalence of ADHD in the Criminal Justice System. Special attention was given on how to recognize ADHD on the street and in jail settings.
