Coaching for children is based on the individual child, and at what stage of growth and awareness the child is at with their ADHD. Parents normally would be encouraged to attend at least the first few sessions, so that they become familiar with the coaching process.

Usually parents would be encouraged to take on a bit of the coaching responsibilities in-between appointments. Normally, the goal of a coach is to take that role of "enforcer" out of the hands of a significant other. With children, however, that cannot always be the case as situations develop that must be addressed immediately.

The "coach" in dealing with children often does actually take on the role of a coach similar to a sports coach. This is not true for adult clients. The child is told what to expect at the next "practice" and the coach holds them accountable using empathetic and positive reinforcement in an attempt to gain a "neutral third party" whom the child wants to be successful and accountable too.

If you would like to stop in, visit, or call me, I would be happy to explain this in more detail. We deal with the present and the future with our clients, and try and avoid past issues as much as possible, as we are not therapist. The child should have an official diagnosis of ADHD from a Psychologist/Psychiatrist or other licensed professional.
